Two Mbrengwa brothers die in mine shaft

In a tragic incident two brothers from Mberengwa died after suffocating in a mine shaft during a mining activity in Mberengwa, it has emerged.
According to the police in Midlands the tragedy occurred in the early hours of the 5th of September at Peak Mine in Mberengwa.
“Police confirms two sudden deaths of brothers who suffocated in a mine shaft during a mining activity in Mberengwa. The incident occured on the 5th of September 2023 at around 001hours at Peak Mine, Mberengwa,” Midlands police spokerperson Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed.
Mahoko said the two brothers Thamsanqa Zondo aged (30) was mining with his brother Dumisani Zondo aged (23) both from Village Madumezwe under Chief Mapiravana, they were mining with a colleague Corneliuos Hove (23).
“It is alleged Thamsanqa Zondo was lowered into a 40 metre mine shaft and upon reaching underground he shouted for help. Hove was lowered into the mine shaft to investigate what had happened, but before he reached underground he experienced difficulties in breathing and he signalled to be uplifted back to the surface,” he said.
However, the younger Zondo brother decided to enter the mine shaft to rescue his brother but he failed to return to the mine surface which made Hove to alert other miners who formed a rescue team and retrived the two bodies from the shaft.
A police report was made and investigatiosn are currently underway.
