Kwekwe budget consultations in limbo

By William Milasi
Kwekwe City Council budget consultations which were supposed to be rolled out in the coming days have been postponed as opposition Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) councillors have disengaged from the city affairs.
The disengagement from council business by the opposition councillors across the country follows an order by the party’s main opposition leader Nelson Chamisa who ordered his council and parliementary deployees to disengage following the recall of 15 CCC parliamentarians by self-styled CCC Secretary General Sengezo Shabangu, who has also recalled some Bulawayo councillors.
While the matter is now before the courts, it is service delivery which is taking a battering in the ensuing brawling.
In Kwekwe the budget which was supposed to outline the city’s financial plan for the coming year has now been postponed.
Most towns and cities the majority which are controlled by Chamisa are now on autopilot while service delivery continues to deteriorate.
Kwekwe is battling water challenges, poor sanitation, poor infrastructure and other services.
“We had to postpone the budget consultations indefinetely following a directive from our party that we disengage from council. Normal business will only resume after the impasse is solved,” Finance Committee Chairperson Alex Senge said in an interview.
According to a schedule doing the rounds budget consultation were supposed to commence this coming week.

Efforts to get a comment from Town Clerk Dr Lucia Mkandla proved fruitless by time of publishing.
