Man axes granny (85) over ‘witchcraft’

A 24-year-old man from Village Chikuruhuhwa, Chief Chirumanzu area struck his grandmother (85) with an axe after he accused her of being a witch.

According to Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko, the man struck his grandmother on the head and she escaped death by a whisker after neighbors took her to hospital.
“On the 20th of October 2023 at around 2300 hours, Faustina Mazani a female aged 85 years of Chikuruhuhwa Village, Chief Chirumanzu was sleeping in her bedroom. Her nephew Akim Mazani allegedly entered her bedroom and struck her on the head with an axe while accusing her of killing his father through witchcraft,” he said.
The neighbors heard the noise and rushed to Faustina’s homestead to investigate. They found Akim holding an axe in the yard and he ran away upon seeing them.
“The Good Samaritans entered the bedroom and found the complainant lying unconscious, they rendered first aid and took the complainant to St Theresa Hospital where she was admitted. A report was made at ZRP Charandura and the suspect is still at large,” he said.
Mahoko called on members of the public to report to the nearest police station if they know the whereabouts of Akim.
“As investigations are progressing we call upon members of the public who might have information which might lead to the arrest of Akim Mazani to report to the nearest police station. We urge members of the public not to resort to violence when solving their differences,” he said.
