Mine deaths worrying: Police

By Staff Reporter

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) said it is worried about the high prevalence of deaths associated with mine shaft collapse in the country.
Addressing journalists in Kwekwe recently ZRP Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said there is a disturbing trend of illegal gold miners facing fatal consequences due to mine collapses.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said the lack of proper mining knowledge is a significant factor contributing to this alarming rise in fatalities.
“We are having a lot of cases of people dying in mining shafts because of lack of proper mining knowledge. Recently people died at a mine in Chikuti, Chinhoyi and it is not limited to that area, it is happening in other parts of the country,” he said.
Nyathi said the media should complement government efforts by raising awareness of the dangers of illegal unregulated mining.
Assistant Commissioner Nyathi the deaths are coupled with a scourge of machete gangs or machete-related violence.
“These mine shaft deaths are coupled with the occurrence of machete wars and violent gangs associated with illegal mining activities. These conflicts pose serious threats to the safety and well-being of both miners and local communities. The media has to play a proactive role in raising awareness about the hazards of engaging in illegal and unprofessional mining. We know that these people are looking for money but it should be done in a regulated manner,” he said.
He said by disseminating information on the risks and dangers involved, the media can help prevent further loss of life and injuries in the mining sector.
Recently 10 illegal miners died at Bay Horse Mine in Chegutu following a shaft collapse whilst many others were injured.
