Kwekwe is set to host 200 karatekas from across Zimbabwe in a two-day tournament scheduled for July 27-28, 2024 at Kwekwe Queens Sports Club.
In an interview recently, Sensei Shepherd Ziwira the organizer of the tournament shared details about the event, emphasizing its inclusivity of various age groups and skill levels.
“We will be having our tournament starting on the 27th of July 2024. It’s a two-day event hosting competitors from across Zimbabwe. We have different categories ranging from 4-year-olds to veteran karatekas,” he said.
Kwekwe will be proudly represented by a strong 40-member team, including award-winning Tanyaradzwa Ziwira, who represented Zimbabwe in the All Africa Games in Ghana earlier this year. Other notable team members include Lucky Dube, Aiden Ziwira, Simbarashe Machingura, Tawanada Pira, Anesu Chiunda, Brooklyn Bangidza, Tadiwa Mutsinze, Tanatswa Pedzsera, Ashleigh Madekubve, Rumbidzai Chiunda, and Vanessa Mhlanga.
“We have a strong 40-member team from Kwekwe,” Ziwira said. “We have Tanyaradzwa Ziwira, Lucky Dube, Aiden Ziwira, Simbarashe Machingura, Tawanada Pira, Anesu Chiunda, Brooklyn Bangidza, Tadiwa Mutsinze, Tanatswa Pedzsera, Ashleigh Madekubve, Rumbidzai Chiunda, and Vanessa Mhlanga as part of the Kwekwe team.”
Ziwira also highlighted the growing participation of women in the sport. “In terms of female and male participation, it’s around 40/60, which is a great improvement,” he noted.
The tournament promises to be a significant event in the Zimbabwean karate calendar, showcasing the talents of young and seasoned karatekas alike.
