Kwekwe Runners Club which began as a modest dream shared by three running enthusiasts in October 2024 is preparing for a landmark celebration to mark its official launch on 20 April 2025.
The club, which was formally registered under the Midlands Athletics Board through the National Athletics Association of Zimbabwe (NAAZ) in March 2025, has rapidly expanded from just seven founding members to 103 active participants.
The diverse group includes social runners, aspiring professionals, and the ever-spirited “Duck Squad” — a term affectionately used for the slower-paced runners, united by a shared passion for fitness and camaraderie.
“Our vision was always to create a home for runners of all levels,” said club spokesperson Ashley Jana.
“Whether you are chasing a personal best or just looking for community and movement, there’s a space for you here. As we say, #tirichinhuone — we leave no one behind,” Jana said.
The club is now set to hold its official launch event on 20 April 2025 at Kwekwe Queens Club, located in the heart of the gold mining town in Zimbabwe’s Midlands region.
The launch is expected to draw more than 150 runners from around the country, including special guests from their sister club, Gweru Runners Club, who are known for the lively “GRC Bus” — a tradition where runners sing in harmony while jogging.
In addition to the main run, the day will feature high-energy aerobics sessions and live music performances to keep spirits high and hearts pumping.
The club has already made a name for itself through previous events, including the Gweru-Kwekwe 65km Fun Run, which drew over 50 participants, and the Valentine’s Fun Run, which further solidified ties with their Gweru counterparts.
Looking ahead, the Kwekwe Runners Club has its sights set on becoming a hub for regional running events and talent development.
“We aim to grow our annual calendar with even bigger events that bring together runners from across Africa. Ultimately, we want to nurture elite athletes who can raise the Kwekwe Runners Club flag high on international stages. For us, the sky is not the limit,” Jana said.
