Two members of the newly launched Kwekwe Runners Club (KRC) are flying the city’s flag high after taking part in the Asambeni Malegends Relay, an 880km endurance race from Harare to Victoria Falls.
The relay, which kicked off on 29 June 2025 and is expected to finish on 5 July, brings together 33 seasoned runners from across Zimbabwe. Representing Kwekwe were Takudzwa Chibururu and Prosper Muwirimi, who each covered a 25km stretch in the Midlands province today.
Chibururu took on the Sherwood to Zimpost Kwekwe leg, while Muwirimi carried the baton from Zimpost to Hunters Road.
“We are so thrilled and very elevated to be part of this amazing program,” said Sarah Chigerwe, one of the founders and treasurer of Kwekwe Runners Club.
“Running is not just a hobby—it takes courage, passion and motivation, and that alone has made us who we are today as KRC,” she said.
Chigerwe, who co-founded the club with Ashley Jana and Gideon Greya after a casual morning run last year, said the initiative has grown beyond their expectations.
“Our numbers started increasing, and on 20 April 2025, we officially launched Kwekwe Runners Club. We now have over 100 members,” she said.
Chigerwe described the relay experience as an emotional milestone for the club.
“It brings so much joy to see our team members taking part in this relay. Believe me, this is such an exclusive and memorable moment we will forever cherish. And I promise you, this is just the beginning—more greatness is yet to come,” she added.
The Asambeni Malegends Relay aims to promote fitness, national unity, and community engagement through long-distance running.
The relay is a precursor to the Victoria Falls Marathon to be held on the 6th of July 2025
