The Midlands State University (MSU) on Thursday held its 26th graduation ceremony in Kwekwe, marking the first time the event was hosted outside the institution’s main campus in Gweru.
The ceremony coincided with the commissioning of the newly constructed Emmerson Dambudzo Mnangagwa Law School.
A total of 6,849 students graduated, with 54 percent of the graduands being female. President Emmerson Mnangagwa, who presided over the event, capped the graduates.
In his keynote address, the President commended MSU for broadening access to higher education through its multi-campus approach.
“I commend MSU for distinguishing itself as a forward looking and responsive institution that meets the needs of the economy at large through its multi campus system,” he said.
He further noted that the university is aligning its programmes with the national development agenda under Heritage-Based Education 5.0.
The new Kwekwe Campus will accommodate three faculties: Law; Agriculture, Environment and Natural Resources Management; and Built Environment, Art and Design.
Located less than 10km from Kwekwe’s Central Business District, the campus sits on a 50-hectare stand donated by the Kwekwe City Council.
