Kwekwe eyes high-tech waste management system

The City of Kwekwe is exploring plans to introduce a modern, high-tech waste management system, taking inspiration from Harare’s Geo Pomona facility, Mayor Councillor Albert Zinhanga has revealed.

The move comes as council seeks to overhaul refuse collection and disposal in the city, which has long struggled with inefficient waste management. Zinhanga said city officials recently attended the commissioning of the Pomona project following an invitation by President Emmerson Mnangagwa to selected local authorities.

“The visit allowed us to see first-hand what has been achieved there and how we could adapt similar systems for Kwekwe,” the mayor said.

The Geo Pomona facility, renowned for its advanced technology and automated machinery, showcased modern approaches to waste management, including waste separation, recycling, and processing. According to Zinhanga, the experience highlighted the need for Kwekwe to move beyond conventional methods.

“We are still in the exploratory phase, but it is clear that we need to consider systems that are environmentally friendly and efficient,” he said.

Council has already received expressions of interest from both local and international companies specialising in waste management. Management plans to carefully review proposals to identify a model that suits Kwekwe’s unique needs and capacities.

Zinhanga said city councillors and senior management were preparing for a detailed study visit to the Pomona facility to gain deeper insights into operational and management best practices.

“While no decisions have been made yet, this initiative is a priority for us. We want to ensure that when implemented, the system delivers real benefits for residents and the environment,” he said.

If successful, Kwekwe could become a model for modern waste management in smaller cities, improving public health, reducing pollution, and creating opportunities for recycling and value-added processing.
