Local pastors have been told to allow congregants to wear Zanu PF party regalia in church.
Addressing hundreds of party supporters including the clergy under the banner Pastors for ED in Rutendo, Redcliff on Monday Zanu PF Midlands Province Vice Chairperson Edson Chiherenge made an unexpected request to pastors not to turn away congregants if they attend services wearing the party’s regalia.
“Pastors for ED at your churches there are so many people, first speak about President Emmerson Mnangagwa before anything else. Do not turn away or deny people wearing regalia access into your churches it is normal these days,” he said.
The request stirred a fervent debate amongst the crowd, with some questioning the appropriate intersection of politics and religion while others viewed it as an expression of solidarity with their political party.
Meanwhile, senior party official Owen Mudha Ncube expressed gratitude to the pastors for rallying behind Zanu PF.
“In Zanu PF we prioritize everyone that’s why you find that even pastors are here. That is why President Emmerson Mnangagwa set the voting day on a Wednesday to cater for everyone so that no one misses a church service because of elections,” he said.
