The construction of the new Globe and Phoenix Primary School is making significant strides, with technicians working on-site to prepare for relocation early next year.
The new school is being built after the old Globe and Phoenix Primary School was decommissioned in March 2023, following the collapse of classrooms into an underground mining tunnel. Since then, students and staff have been conducting lessons at Sally Mugabe Primary School grounds.
To accelerate the project, government partnered with the Latter-Day Saints Church of Jesus Christ, which has conducted feasibility studies and plans to join the construction efforts fully by early next year.
Kwekwe District Development Coordinator, Fortune Mupungu, said progress at the new site is on track, with foundational work underway.
“Currently, we are fine-tuning the foundation to ensure it’s completed before the rainy season intensifies,” said Mupungu.
“The Department of Public Works and Kwekwe Polytechnic staff are actively working on-site, and our goal is to have a slab in place early next year to facilitate relocation,” he said.
He expressed optimism about relocating students and staff to the new site within the planned timeframe.
“If all goes according to plan, we should move the tents to the new site early next year. Conditions there will be much better compared to the current setup, and we aim to have some building facilities completed by then,” he said.
Mupungu also highlighted that lessons at the temporary campsite are progressing without major disruptions.
“All is well at the campsite, and there have been no reports of disturbances from rains or strong winds this year. Our team is always on the ground to ensure a conducive learning environment,” he added.
While the project is advancing, Mupungu said efforts are ongoing to secure additional resources.
“We are still mobilizing more resources, and we welcome any assistance from willing stakeholders,” he said.
