Kwekwe battles water infrastructure vandalism: Mayor

Staff Reporter

Kwekwe City Council is currently battling with the destruction of its water and sewer infrastructure.

According to the Kwekwe Mayor in a message, the major culprits in the destruction are illegal gold panners and people who produce vegetables for sale.

“There are citizens who vandalize water and sewerage infrastructure to water their gardens, agricultural plots, and others do it to process their gold. This is a punishable criminal offence and residents should report these people,” he said.

Dr Madzorera said that sometimes residents notice these illegal activities but they do not raise alarm not knowing that it has a ripple effect on their water bills.

“But more importantly there are citizens who see this vandalization happening and they keep quiet. The net effect is on their water tariffs as the costs will cover usage by these criminals,” he said.

He urged residents to report vandalism of public infrastructure.
