Lessons at Globe and Phoenix Primary School, Kwekwe has finally resumed following a turbulent week which saw tents they are using as temporary classrooms blown away by wind.
The school currently housed at Sally Mugabe Primary School has been utilizing temporary tents to cope with the fallout from the collapse of a classroom block in March this year caused by illegal mining activities. Unfortunately, strong winds blew away the tents, presenting yet another setback for the already troubled institution which had to put classes on hold this week.
Kwekwe District Civil Protection Unit (CPU) Chairperson, Fortune Mupungu, said they swiftly addressed the problem with help from the Public Works Department.
“Yes tents were blown by the winds on the 11th of July 2023 and we had suspended lessons but as the CPU we ran around and our team together with Public Works Department restored them to order. As we speak lessons have resumed,” he said.

Globe and Phoenix Primary School is now temporarily utilizing the facilities at Sally Mugabe Primary School. This arrangement was made after the collapse of the classroom block rendered their premises uninhabitable. The unfortunate incident was a direct consequence of unauthorized mining activities in the area, highlighting the detrimental impact of such illegal practices.
Meanwhile, construction of a new school is set to start soon after the completion of a geo survey to determine the state of the underground at the new site.

“We are waiting for the geo survey results so that when they come out we would know if the new site is suitable for school construction as we do not know the structure below the ground.
The geo survey will inform us as we are ready to build, we have stakeholders who are ready to build,” he said.
