Man left for dead after mistaken identity

A Gweru man was left for dead after he was stabbed by another man who mistakenly identified him as a criminal terrorizing residents in the Mandiro Tuckshop area, Shurugwi on Monday.

Witness Dube (31) was stabbed all over his body with a knife by a man only identified as Mutumbani. The incident took place when he was coming from work.

Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed the incident which is being treated as an attempted murder case.

According to Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector, Dube of Woodlands Phase 1 in Gweru knocked off duty at his mine shaft in Shurugwi and took his way home on foot. 

“While on the way, he was intercepted by another man he only knew as Mutumbani of Charuma mine who was drinking beer at Mandiro tuckshop. It is alleged, the suspect started accusing the complainant of being a dangerous criminal who terrorizes innocent people at night. 

He produced a knife which he used to indiscriminately stab him all over the body and the complainant fell. A security guard from a nearby mine intervened and the suspect disappeared. A well-wisher assisted the complainant with transport to Shurugwi Hospital where he was further transferred to Gweru General Hospital for further treatment. The complainant sustained serious injuries,” he said.

Police called on members of the public with information on the whereabouts of Mutumbani to notify the nearest police station
