Men vulnerable to cervical cancer virus: Dr Madzorera

By Staff Reporter

Dr. Henry Madzorera, a renowned medical expert, has shed light on a lesser-known aspect of cervical cancer causing human papillomavirus (HPV) which he said can cause disfiguring warts in men.

Dr Madzorera said that while men cannot develop cervical cancer from HPV, they are still susceptible to contracting disfiguring warts from certain strains of the virus.

Speaking on WhatsApp platform recently, Dr Madzorera said there is need for increased awareness and education regarding HPV and its potential impact on both men and women. He stressed that while HPV is commonly associated with cervical cancer in women, men are not immune to its effects.

“HPV is sexually transmitted, so a woman gets it from a man and she can pass it to the next man if she has multiple partners. Men do not have a uterus so the man will not get cancer but the woman will.

Men can get ugly disfiguring warts instead if the strain of HPV causes warts. These should be cauterized or treated,” said Dr Madzorera.

Meanwhile, Dr Madzorera has urged women to get screened for cervical cancer.

“Women can completely prevent cervical cancer through early viac testing which is being provided at most medical facilities in Zimbabwe. Cervical cancer can be treated at an early stage if detected, every woman should get screened,” he said
