A chilling discovery has rocked Silobela after scattered human remains were found in a bushy area near Gweru River in the Jena Mines area on Sunday morning, sparking fears that a woman may have been brutally killed.
The remains were discovered on 8 February, 2026, at around 8am, Midlands Provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed.
Police said the grim find was made by a local man, Nkosana Mgezwa (39), who was walking home when he stumbled upon bones scattered in the bush near the river.
“During scene attendance, police discovered scattered human remains. Clothes believed to belong to an adult female were also found about 20 metres from the remains,” said Inspector Mahoko.
The presence of women’s clothing near the scene has deepened the mystery surrounding the identity of the deceased and the circumstances leading to the death, with investigators not ruling out foul play.
The area was immediately cordoned off as police launched investigations and moved the remains for further examination.
Police are now appealing to families with missing relatives to come forward, as efforts intensify to establish the identity of the deceased.
“We are appealing to members of the public who may be missing a relative or who have information that could assist in identifying the remains to report at any nearest police station,” Mahoko said.
The shocking discovery has left villagers in the area shaken, with many expressing fear and concern over safety near the river.
Investigations are continuing.
