Redcliff to repossess 1200 stands over payment defaults

Redcliff Municipality is set to repossess over 1200 stands from owners who have defaulted on their payments.

The local authority has issued a 30-day ultimatum for the defaulters to settle their dues or risk losing their stands.

Speaking in an interview after a full council meeting on Monday, Acting Director of Housing and Community Services Ernest Chigwagwa said the decision was prompted by the municipality’s concern over long-standing payment arrears.

Chigwagwa said some beneficiaries have been holding on to the stands without developing them, thereby disadvantaging about 1,500 prospective homeowners on the local authority’s waiting list.

“There are people who bought stands in 2009 and they have not been paying, so we are expecting them to come pay or make room for about 1,000 to 1,500 people on the waiting list. These people are not even developing the stand,” he said.

The municipality has since published notices in local newspapers, informing the public about the impending repossessions.
