Mechanic ‘kills’ Redcliff couple

Staff Reporter

A Kwekwe mechanic allegedly killed a Redcliff couple in unclear circumstances yesterday at about 1830 hours.

Collins Jongwe (34) of Chicago, Kwekwe allegedly killed Kenneth Pedzisai Chirashi (75) and his wife Lorna Taylor Chirashi (69) at their home in Redcliff.

Jongwe was arrested by police at the 10km peg along Gokwe-Kwekwe  Road after he was seen driving the couple’s Mercedes Benz E300 with no number plates. It is said upon being quizzed why he was driving the car he said there was a customer who had bought the car and he was delivering it to him in Gokwe.

When police searched the car they found Kenneth’s national identification card and cellphone.

Midlands Police Spokesperson Inspector Emmanuel Mahoko confirmed the murder and arrest.

Inspector Mahoko said the couple’s son Mike Chirashi called his father’s cellphone which was answered by the police who informed him about the arrest of Jongwe.

Mike then called a neighbor Lamulani Sithole to check on his parents.

“Sithole went to check, found doors locked and could not locate anyone. He reported the case to the police. Police attended the scene and observed that all doors were locked. They peeped through the bathroom window and saw a lying human body. They broke the door and gained entry.

Inside the house the police found Kenneth Pedzisai Chirashi lying on the floor with a deep cut on the forehead and a rope tied around the neck. The wife’s body was also found lying in the bathroom with four deep cuts on the head,” said Mahoko.

A neighbor indicated that in the morning around 0700 hours he heard someone screaming from the Chirashi’s residence and after some minutes he saw Jongwe driving the couple’s car.

Jongwe is assisting police with investigations.
